The best time to visit Sestri Levante is June or the second half of September: the sea is warm, the beaches have room and prices are below August levels. Come in May or October for walking, and in winter for a quiet town at low-season rates.
The best time to visit Sestri Levante, in short
In June, at seven in the evening, Baia del Silenzio belongs to a few swimmers and a couple of fishermen. In August, at the same hour, you are looking for a gap between towels. Same beach, same light, a completely different trip. That is why the month you choose matters more here than almost anywhere else on the Riviera.
My honest answer, after hosting guests since 2018: the best time to visit Sestri Levante is June or the second half of September. The water is already (or still) warm, you find space on the sand and prices sit below August.
- May and June: mild weather, few crowds, sea warming up.
- July and August: full summer, the warmest sea, packed beaches and hard parking.
- September: water still around 22-24°C, fewer people, lower prices.
- October to April: off season. Quiet, cheaper, and many seasonal businesses close.
If you only have one day, my one-day Sestri Levante itinerary works in any season.
Sestri Levante weather by month: air, sea and crowds
Sestri Levante has a mild Mediterranean climate. Winters are rarely harsh and summers are hot but usually saved by a sea breeze in the afternoon. Rain is concentrated in October and November. The figures below are indicative, from what I see every year, not official records.
| Month | Daytime air | Sea | Crowds |
|---|---|---|---|
| December to February | Mild, often 10-15°C | Below 15°C | Very low |
| March and April | Fresh, April rarely above 18°C | Cold | Low |
| May | Changeable, 20-25°C | About 17-19°C | Low |
| June | 22-26°C | About 21-22°C | Moderate |
| July and August | Can pass 28-30°C | Warmest, around 24-25°C | Very high |
| September | Still summery, cool evenings | About 22-24°C, cooling late in the month | Moderate, falling |
| October and November | Pleasant until mid-October, then cooler | Cooling | Low |
One thing guidebooks rarely mention: the tramontana, a cold north wind that comes down from the hills. Outside summer it often picks up in the afternoon. The sky stays clear, but the temperature you feel drops fast. Pack a windproof jacket from autumn to spring, and a light sweater even in June evenings.
Best time for swimming and the beaches
The beach season runs from late May to September. The water only goes above 20°C from June. In May most people find it cold, unless you are used to the North Sea.
A note if you have never been to an Italian beach. Much of the sand is taken by stabilimenti, private beach clubs where you rent a sunbed and umbrella by the day. The rest is spiaggia libera, free public beach where you just lay down your towel. Most beach clubs run from late spring to September, so in October you swim, if you swim, on a beach with no services.
Baia del Silenzio
Fine sand, a seabed that slopes gently, sheltered from the north wind. From mid-June the water is already around 22-23°C. In August it is the most crowded beach in town: get there at 9 am and the free sand is gone. In late May and September it is another place, same light, a fraction of the people. Read more in my guide to Baia del Silenzio.
Baia delle Favole
Longer, about 1 km, with more beach clubs and services. It faces south-west, so the sun stays on it until late. Busy in July and August, but less than Baia del Silenzio. In June and September you find space even on the free sections.
Riva Trigoso
A village one train stop south, about 5 minutes. Two pebble beaches, clearer water, and never as crowded as the centre, even in August.
If you can choose freely, the beaches of Sestri Levante are at their best between roughly 10 June and early July: warm sea, normal prices, room for your towel.
When to visit Sestri Levante to avoid crowds and high prices
I will be blunt: August is not the best Sestri. Not out of snobbery, out of evidence. Italians take their main holidays in August, especially around Ferragosto on 15 August, and much of Genoa and Milan seems to come here. Parking is close to impossible, restaurants are fully booked, beaches are packed.
- Parking: in July and August car parks fill early. Arrive after 10 am and you often end up far from the centre. In spring and September the problem disappears. My guide to parking in Sestri Levante covers where to leave the car.
- Prices: in the low season (November, January, February) holiday apartments cost roughly half what they do in August.
- Restaurants: in July and August many need a booking, especially near Baia del Silenzio. In low season some close on a rotating basis, so check opening days before you go.
If you must come between 20 July and 25 August, two tricks help. Go to Baia del Silenzio before 8:30 am or after 5 pm. Or take the train to Riva Trigoso. And leave the car at home if you can: Sestri is easy to visit without a car, with the station in the centre on the Genoa–La Spezia line.
Best time for hiking and the Cinque Terre
For walking, the best months are May, June, September and October. Temperatures sit roughly between 18 and 24°C and you avoid the sticky heat of midsummer.
- Punta Manara: the trail over the headland is open all year, but in summer the sun beats down with little shade. Spring and autumn give you mild temperatures and a sharp view of the sea.
- Cinque Terre by train: from Sestri to Monterosso it is about 20 minutes by regional train. Avoid July and August, when trains are full. In spring and autumn the villages are calmer and you find free tables at lunch. Here is how to plan the Cinque Terre from Sestri Levante.
Sestri Levante off season: autumn and winter
From October to April Sestri is a different town, more real and less postcard. Beach clubs are closed, some seasonal restaurants shut, and buses and trains run less often. In exchange you get the old town to yourself and the year's best sunsets.
Autumn starts well: until mid-October it is often pleasant. Then come the wettest weeks of the year, with sudden downpours. I wrote a separate guide to Sestri Levante in autumn, October and November, with what stays open and what to do on a rainy day.
Winter is mild, often 10-15°C by day, with frequent tramontana. December brings Christmas lights and markets in the old town, and February the local Carnival. Fewer tourists, more local life.
For the month just before low season, I have a detailed page on Sestri Levante in September (in Italian).
What to eat in each season
Ligurian cooking follows the seasons, so when you come also changes what is on the table.
- Spring: fresh anchovies and vegetables for torta pasqualina, a savoury pie.
- Summer: just-caught oily fish and basil at its best, which means pesto.
- Autumn: porcini mushrooms and chestnuts start to appear.
- All year: farinata (a thin chickpea flatbread), pansoti with walnut sauce, and focaccia.
A tip from experience: the restaurants right on the harbour are often expensive and touristy. Walk five or ten minutes away from the sea view and you eat better for less. If you are wondering where to stay to walk everywhere, our holiday apartments in Sestri Levante are 2 and 5 minutes on foot from the sea, one next to the station and one with private parking.
If your dates are flexible, aim for mid-June. Bring a sweater anyway: when the wind turns around 6 pm, you remember you are in northern Italy.
