Sestri Levante in autumn is worth it if you want a quiet town, lower prices and walks without the heat: early October is often still mild, while November is the wettest and emptiest month. The sea cools down, but the bays are lovely to walk.
Is Sestri Levante in autumn worth it?
In mid-October, at five in the afternoon, Baia del Silenzio has its boats pulled up on the sand, two people sitting on the sea wall and a low light hitting the painted houses sideways. No umbrellas, no music from beach bars. This is the Sestri I have known since 2018, once the summer guests have gone home.
The short answer: Sestri Levante in autumn is worth it if you want peace, lower prices and walks without the heat. It is not the right choice if you need warm sea every day.
- Early October: often still mild and pleasant outdoors.
- Late October and November: the wettest weeks of the year in Liguria, with sudden downpours.
- The sea: cooling week by week, and the beach clubs are closed.
- Crowds: almost none. The town belongs to the locals again.
This page covers October and November only. If you are still choosing when to come, start with the best time to visit Sestri Levante, month by month.
Sestri Levante weather in October and November
The climate here is mild all year, but autumn is when it rains most. Rain is concentrated in October and November, usually as short, heavy storms rather than whole grey days.
| October | November | |
|---|---|---|
| Weather | Mild until mid-month, then cooler | Cool, more rainy days |
| Sea | Cooling, swimming only for the hardy | Cold for most people |
| Wind | Tramontana picking up in the afternoon | Tramontana more frequent and stronger |
| Crowds | Low, some lively weekends | Very low |
The tramontana is a cold north wind that comes down from the hills. When it blows the sky is clear, but it feels much colder than the thermometer says. Pack a windproof jacket rather than a heavy coat.
Two practical points. Italy goes back to standard time on the last Sunday of October, so in November it is dark soon after 5 pm: plan outdoor things for the morning. And after heavy rain the Liguria region can issue a weather alert (allerta meteo). If that happens during your stay, follow local instructions and postpone hikes and boat trips.
Can you swim in Sestri Levante in October?
To be honest: in early October, on a sunny day with no wind, some people still swim. I see it as a bonus, not a reason to come. In November the sea is for looking at.
A word on Italian beaches. In summer much of the sand is taken by stabilimenti, private beach clubs renting sunbeds and umbrellas. They close at the end of the summer season, so in autumn every beach is effectively a free beach, but with no showers, loungers or bars. What you get instead are bays made for walking:
- Baia del Silenzio: sheltered from the north wind, the nicest spot on a breezy afternoon.
- Baia delle Favole: about 1 km long, facing south-west, in the sun until late. Good for a long walk.
- Riva Trigoso: one train stop south, pebble beaches and hardly anyone around.
More on each one in my guide to the beaches of Sestri Levante. If swimming is the priority, September is your month, not October.
Things to do in Sestri Levante in autumn
Autumn is the season for things that are hard work in summer. The heat is gone, trains have free seats and, on good days, the trails are dry.
Walk Punta Manara
The trail over the Punta Manara headland is open all year, but in summer there is little shade. In October the view over the Gulf of Tigullio is sharper and you walk without sweating. Go in the morning, and skip it the day after a big storm, when the path gets slippery.
Cinque Terre by train, without the crowds
Monterosso is about 20 minutes away by regional train. In autumn the villages are calmer and you find a table at lunch. Here is how to plan the Cinque Terre from Sestri Levante. Check the timetable before you go: off-season trains run less often.
The old town and autumn food
The pedestrian old town between the two bays is small enough to explore on foot, and in autumn it is lived in by locals. Wander the carruggi, the narrow alleys typical of Ligurian towns, with my guide to Sestri Levante's old town. On the menu you start to see porcini mushrooms and chestnuts. Nine times out of ten you eat better in the trattorias a few streets back than on the harbour.
On a rainy day
In November you may get a full day or two of rain. Churches, small museums and a warm focaccia shop will save it. Plan your day in the morning and keep the afternoon flexible.
Autumn events in Sestri Levante
Autumn is not the season for big events here, and that is rather the point. A couple of dates may still shape your trip.
- Sestri Levante Watercolor: an international watercolour festival, with artists painting live in the old town and around the bays. Exhibitions and demonstrations are usually free, some workshops require booking. It is held in autumn but the dates change every year: see the Sestri Levante Watercolor festival page (in Italian) and check the dates for the current edition.
- The run-up to Christmas: late in the autumn the town starts getting ready for December, with lights and markets. Dates vary from year to year, so check before you book.

Crowds, prices and what is open in October and November
October and November are low season. In practice that means three things.
- Prices: in November holiday apartments cost roughly half the August rate. October sits in between, with some busier weekends.
- Restaurants: some close for a few weeks or on a rotating basis, and many have a weekly closing day. Book or call ahead, even if the place looks empty. Italians eat dinner late, usually from around 8 pm, and smaller towns keep to that in low season too.
- Getting around: parking stops being a problem, and regional trains on the Genoa–La Spezia line are comfortable and quieter. It is easy to do the whole trip without a car.
With short days, staying within walking distance of everything matters more than in summer. Our holiday apartments in Sestri Levante are 2 and 5 minutes on foot from the sea, one 2 minutes from the station and one with private parking.
October or November: which month to choose
If you can choose, go for the first half of October. You still get mild days, light until the clocks change, dry trails and a few seafront places open. It is what I suggest to anyone who wants to walk and see the Cinque Terre without the crowds.
November is for those who want an empty town and the lowest prices, and accept a gamble on the weather. It works well for a long weekend: old town, warm focaccia, a walk along the bays, and a museum if it rains.
After November comes real winter, with Christmas and the tramontana days. I wrote about it in my guide to Sestri Levante in winter (in Italian).
One last thing. In autumn pack a small umbrella and shoes that can get wet. A storm here rolls in within twenty minutes and leaves just as fast, and afterwards Baia del Silenzio has the cleanest colours of the year.
