Parking in Sestri Levante: Car Parks, Blue Lines and the ZTL Explained

Parking in Sestri Levante means paid spaces: the Mandela car park and the blue-line bays near the centre and the station, at roughly €2 an hour in summer. The old town is a limited traffic zone, so park outside it, arrive before 9–10 am in high season and do everything else on foot.

Parking in Sestri Levante: the short answer

In August, at ten in the morning, Sestri Levante has a familiar sound: engines idling slowly past full blue-line bays. Parking here is not impossible. It just rewards people who arrive early and know where to go.

  • Main car park: the Mandela car park, paid, a short walk from the centre and the bays.
  • Street parking: blue-line bays around the centre and the station, paid by the hour.
  • Old town: a limited traffic zone (ZTL). Do not drive in.
  • High season: arrive before 9–10 am, or expect to circle.
  • Easiest option: accommodation with its own parking space.

If you have not booked your trip yet, it is worth reading how to get to Sestri Levante by train as well. In summer it often saves more time than any parking strategy.

How parking works in Italy: blue, white and yellow lines

If you are driving in Italy for the first time, the colour of the lines tells you almost everything.

  • Blue lines (strisce blu): paid parking. Pay at the nearby meter or with a parking app, and leave the ticket visible on the dashboard if the meter gives you one.
  • White lines: usually free, but check nearby signs for time limits. In the centre of Sestri in summer, they are rare and always taken.
  • Yellow lines: reserved, for example for residents, loading or disabled badge holders. Do not park there.

Paid hours and rates are posted on signs and on the meters. They can change between high and low season, so read them each time rather than assuming.

The ZTL: don't drive into the old town

The historic centre of Sestri Levante sits on a narrow strip of land between the two bays. Its lanes, the carruggi, were built for people and handcarts, not cars. Today the area is a ZTL (zona a traffico limitato), a limited traffic zone.

What this means for visitors:

  • Access is controlled by cameras at the entrance points.
  • If you drive in without a permit, a fine is sent to the car owner. With a rental car, that means the rental company, which usually adds its own admin fee.
  • Active hours depend on the season. Check the current rules on the official Comune di Sestri Levante website.

The simple rule: if you see a ZTL sign, do not follow your sat nav past it. Park outside and walk. My guide to the Sestri Levante old town shows how small the area really is on foot.

Where to park in Sestri Levante

Mandela car park

The main paid car park and the one most visitors use. From here you walk to the centre and the bays in around ten minutes. It is open all year. In summer it fills up early, especially at weekends.

Blue lines near the centre and the station

Paid street parking around the centre and the station area. The station side is handy for the Baia delle Favole, the long sandy bay a few minutes away. Spaces near the Baia del Silenzio are fewer and go first.

Private parking with your accommodation

Honestly, this is the option that removes the problem. Our apartment Due Passi Beach comes with a private parking space and is 5 minutes on foot from the sea. You arrive, park once and forget the car until you leave. You can see it alongside our other apartment on the holiday apartments in Sestri Levante page.

If you book somewhere else, ask about parking before you pay. In August it makes the difference between a relaxed arrival and an hour behind the wheel.

How much does parking in Sestri Levante cost?

As a rough guide, paid parking in Sestri Levante costs around €1.50 to €2 an hour in summer, both in the Mandela car park and on blue lines. Rates and paid hours vary by area and season, so always check the meter.

For a full day in high season, budget a two-figure sum. Over a week, parking can add up to a real line in your holiday budget. That is why a parking space included with the accommodation is often worth more than a small saving on the nightly rate.

Free parking near the sea is very hard to find in summer. Free white-line spaces tend to be further out, in residential areas, and they fill up early too.

Parking in August: when to arrive

From late June to early September, the busiest car parks and blue-line bays are often full by mid-morning, especially at weekends. My advice to guests is always the same:

  1. Arrive before 9–10 am if you want a choice of spaces.
  2. Avoid arriving at lunchtime on a summer Saturday or Sunday.
  3. Grab focaccia while you look. If you arrive hungry, a slice from a bakery saves you a queue at a restaurant later.

Outside summer, everything is easier. In spring and autumn you usually find a space without much effort. My guide to the best time to visit Sestri Levante explains how crowds change through the year.

Park once, then walk or take the train

Once your car is parked, leave it there. Sestri Levante is small: the two bays are joined by the old town, and you change beach in under ten minutes on foot. For details on each bay, read my guide to Sestri Levante beaches.

For day trips, the train is almost always better than the car. Monterosso is about 20 minutes away by regional train, and parking in the Cinque Terre villages is scarce. My guide to the Cinque Terre from Sestri Levante covers it step by step.

If you are still deciding whether to bring a car at all, read about Sestri Levante without a car. And if the central beaches are full, Riva Trigoso, with its quieter pebble beaches, is one stop south by train, about 5 minutes.
